Groundbreaking Event
As you drive by the development site, you’ll notice some equipment starting to appear. Tuesday morning the Harvest Crossing team hired a contractor, J.A. McDonald, to work on the infrastructure of the development. By the afternoon, big equipment appeared in the meadow. They are eager to get started and so are we. But not before we hold our groundbreaking celebration event on Friday, June 12th. Here are the details.
The United Church of Underhill, Town of Underhill, and Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity will celebrate the groundbreaking of Harvest Crossing, a new affordable housing development in Underhill, on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 1 p.m. behind the United Church of Underhill, 7 Park St.
The event is open to the public.
Harvest Crossing is a unique collaboration between the three partners, designed to address Vermont’s critical need for affordable housing. The project will create eight affordable housing units (six single family homes and one duplex) providing hardworking local families with the opportunity to achieve stable, affordable home ownership.
Community members, local officials, project partners, volunteers, and supporters are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony and learn more about the vision behind the development.
“We have all dreamed about welcoming new families to a community that we all love,” says United Church of Underhill Reverend Jen Mihok. “Six years of steady planning and teamwork by the members of the United Church of Underhill, GMHfH, the Town of Underhill and many other supporters is an example of how faith can become action. “
By partnering with Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity, the United Church of Underhill is helping ensure that the homes at Harvest Crossing will be high-quality, energy-efficient, and affordable for generations to come. The development reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the community by creating housing opportunities for families who might otherwise be priced out of the local market.
“Harvest Crossing represents what is possible when community organizations come together to address one of Vermont’s most pressing challenges,” said Brett Johnson, CEO of Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity. “These homes will provide more than shelter – they will provide opportunities for affordable home ownership, wealth creation, growing families, ageing in place, and a brighter future.”
The homes will be built with the help of volunteers, community partners, and future Habitat homeowners, who will contribute “sweat equity” as part of Habitat for Humanity’s home ownership program. The land was purchased and donated by the members of the United Church of Underhill, while a grant through the Vermont Community Development Project (VCDP) is defraying infrastructure costs, resulting in highly affordable homes in the thriving community of Underhill. The groundbreaking marks an important milestone in bringing the Harvest Crossing vision to life and demonstrates the power of partnership in creating lasting solutions to Vermont’s housing shortage.
